Prepare your Figma prototype

Before you import your Figma prototype into Optimal there’s some housekeeping required to ensure you reduce the loading time of the Figma prototype and provide the best participant experience possible for testing.

Figma prototype import checklist:

  • Create a separate Figma file for testing designs and prototypes. If you have set up a prototype flow, ensure all the necessary frames and flows are correct before importing. Make sure you test this using the preview option in Figma.

  • It’s a good idea to remove any elements and pages not required for testing, as this can massively slow down the Figma file's loading times.

  • Ensure all the page names are clear and accurate to help with task setup and analysis.

  • Figma will not compress images, so we recommend compressing them before importing them to Figma. If you are using images that include photographic elements, we recommend using a JPG.

  • Where possible use Figma interactive components to reduce the number of frames required, which helps to reduce Figma's loading times. We recommend storing interactive components on a separate page in Figma to reduce bloat when the pages are uploaded to Optimal.

  • For the best experience for your participants, ensure all your frames have a consistent width.

  • If your Figma file is set to private or password protected you will need to update the file settings to import to Optimal.

How to import your Figma prototype

  1. Create a new Prototype study in Optimal, add a study name, choose the location for your study to live then select ‘Figma link’ then ‘Create study’.

2. Go to the ‘Set up’ tab and click ‘Add prototype’.

3. Retrieve your Figma link. If you copy the prototype link from the design file share modal, frames from across all pages of your prototype will be imported.

If you copy the link from the Prototype share modal in present mode, only the frames in that flow will be imported.

4. Paste your Figma link in the ‘Figma prototype link’ field, then click ‘Import’.

5. Your Figma prototype should appear in the Prototype Preview. If you make any updates to your prototype in Figma, you can Re-sync it by clicking ‘Re-sync to file’ at any time.

Can I use a password protected Figma file for testing?

You can also enter your study password at import so that we can send it to your participants seamlessly without you having to worry about communicating that to them elsewhere.

Privacy permissions and importing

To import your Figma file, Optimal will need to retrieve images of the frames in your prototype. To do this you will need to provide Optimal with access to the design file itself, not just the prototype preview.
